While slacking at work the other day, I came across radiotapes.com.  From the site:

Click on AIRCHECKS to find historic recordings of Twin Cities radio stations dating back to 1924. Recent postings are listed below. Some of the more popular airchecks can be found on the SPECIAL POSTINGS page including coverage of the JFK and RFK shootings/assassinations, 35W Bridge Collapse, Jay Philpott’s Montage Mania and more!

You can also view a collection of radio station videos (local television news coverage)  by clicking on the VIDEOS button. This website also features an extensive collection of airchecks from U100 Radio – WYOO AM/FM. This station had a short lifespan from 1974 to 1976, but is still well remembered by many.

There’s a lot about local radio that I don’t remember growing up, aside from a couple of top-40 stations that played songs that reminded you of girls, and shit.  I went back and listened to a WCCO broadcast of the 1937 St. Paul Winter Carnival Coronation:

WCCO%20Radio%20-%20SPWC%20Coronation%201-30-1937.mp3

Fun, harmless, nonsensical stuff…but not nostalgic in a James Lileks sort of way.  Just interesting to listen to.  Check it out, if local history/radio history is your thing.
